The Karelian Bear Dog
Karelian Bear Dog or more commonly KBD, is an breed of dog originating from the ancestral Komi dog. Although the modern breed was only established in 1936, its genetics stretch much farther into history then that. These dogs are thought to have traveled with indigenous peoples as they traveled into and settled the area that is currently know as Karelia, in eastern Finland.
Developed and used to this day for hunting large game such as elk, moose, and bear, the KBD is known for it’s independent spirit, extremely keen senses, and balanced strength. They have been trained, very successfully, as hunting dogs, search and rescue dogs, sled dog, and obedience and agility competitors.
Once almost extinct, mainly due to the Winter War, the KDB is currently one of the most popular breeds in it’s native Finland. We at North Woods Karelians are proud to work with these majestic dogs and promote and bring their fantastic demeanor and lineages to the North American continent.
